Kyle Onstott, revised by Phillip Onstott. Published by Howell Book House c1962. First written in 1938 and published in 1946, this book has periodically been reprinted and available. Onstott explains fundamentals of genetics though relative to the timeframe he lived, and breeding plans for improvement based on this information. Interesting for an understanding of where the thinking of the purebred fancy has evolved.

Breeding Better Dogs. Carmen Battaglia, Ph.D. Published by BEI. 1986. A behavioral scientist, Dr. Battaglia has studied methods of pedigree analysis for selected behaviors for more than 35 years. His work is primarily with German Shepherd service dogs, but findings reflect on the potential of all purebred dogs. One of his tools is the Stick Dog Pedigree to use for genetic analysis together with genetic pedigrees and traditional pedigrees.

Understanding your dog: behavior, training and communication

Ms. Rugaas describes different behaviors dogs exhibit as they work not to assert dominance among themselves (or people) but to calm them to avoid conflict.
